I enjoyed reading this text because it plays with many of the fears or ideas students have about new younger siblings. When my brother was born I often wanted nothing to do with him and even cried when I first saw him, similar to the main character's notion that his parents brought home a monster from the hospital. For classroom instruction I would try and get the class to understand that the monster in the story is really just a little brother, and that they should be good to their new brothers or sisters. I would recommend this book to teachers because it is a basic example of a twist in writing, it can get students to think about their relationship with their siblings, and it can foster students to become better siblings by taking responsibility for loving their brother or sister.
